Overview

One New Zealand provides telecommunications services to circa 2.3 million mobile connections and fixed line and ICT services to approximately 110,000 business, enterprise, and government customers. To meet growing expectations for uninterrupted connectivity services, the company needed a modern, scalable platform that could support innovation and growth over the next decade.

To achieve this, One New Zealand established the One Horizontal Cloud platform, powered by Red Hat® OpenShift®, Red Hat Ansible® Automation Platform, and Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes. By unifying previously fragmented architectures on 1 cohesive cloud foundation, One New Zealand is reducing delivery times and costs and rolling out new services faster.

Challenge

Building connectivity services for the future

Several acquisitions had left One New Zealand with an IT environment that was highly virtualized but fragmented—with different systems supporting its 5G core, voice, and messaging infrastructure. This made it hard to operate efficiently and build the new features customers wanted. To support the next decade of growth and uninterrupted service, One New Zealand needed a reliable, scalable foundation. "To serve circa 2.3 million mobile connections, around 400,000 broadband connections, and retail stores across the country, we had to come up with a unified backbone solution that could scale," said Sanit Kumar, Head of Cloud Infrastructure Platforms, One New Zealand.

Solution

Modernizing with automation and zero-touch deployments

To support scalability and interoperability, One New Zealand established the One Horizontal Cloud platform, underpinned by Red Hat solutions including Red Hat OpenShift, Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, and Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes. The company selected Red Hat solutions for their open, scalable nature and ease of integration and operation. “At One New Zealand, we have a bold vision around being the most AI-enabled telco, and with the Red Hat platform, we saw that capability built in from the get-go,” said Kumar.

One New Zealand worked with Red Hat Consulting to develop a standard reference architecture and support its engineers with industry best practices delivered through global and local experts. The company also invested in Red Hat Learning Subscription to help train engineers, using a gamified approach for greater engagement.

One Horizontal Cloud now supports 5G services, and both voice and messaging will soon migrate to the new platform. With Red Hat solutions, One New Zealand has automated everything from bare-metal provisioning to deploying operating systems, loading configurations, and managing security controls.

With simplified processes, automation, and zero-touch deployment, One New Zealand has cut delivery times by 40% and costs for deploying new workloads by 45%. The company has not only freed up engineers to spend more time on new services, it has also broken down barriers between teams with centralized tools, a common language, and standard reference architectures.

One New Zealand now plans to offer its customers new services and products via the new platform. “One Horizontal Cloud helps us offer reliable, future-focused services to our customer and means we will be able to deliver innovation faster to provide them with the services they need in today’s digital world,” said Kieran Byrne, Chief Technology Officer, One New Zealand.
