Virtualization has long been the backbone of IT infrastructure that, at its core, is an exercise in modernisation, efficiency and value. When paired with a hybrid cloud strategy, which sees workloads live on-premise, in the cloud, and in edge environments, it transformed how enterprises manage IT resources. It helps enterprises innovate faster and adapt to increasingly complex IT ecosystems.

Right now, we are seeing the virtualization landscape change rapidly, driven by new dynamics and vendor acquisitions. With this, enterprises are experiencing challenges like rising costs and struggling to retain flexibility while keeping operations running smoothly. Many organisations find themselves at a crossroads, evaluating their virtualization strategies in the short to medium term as they face mounting pressure to adapt. In this context, open source solutions are emerging as a strategic choice from both commercial and procurement perspectives.

While the short-term solution may be to maintain the status quo, the level of uncertainty IT leaders are seeing suggests that now is the time for organisations to consider alternative platforms and approaches. Ones that give the flexibility and agility IT leaders need, and the ability to focus IT investments on innovation and growth.

Enterprise open source - a strategic solution

A modern virtualization platform integrates cloud-native technologies like Kubernetes and containers to sit alongside virtual machines (VMs), enabling enterprises to scale and innovate more efficiently. It allows organisations to better align their IT infrastructure with evolving business strategies.

Virtualization remains critical for many organisations. Solutions like Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization can modernise your infrastructure while serving as a strategic bridge between traditional virtualization environments and modern, cloud-native applications, simplifying the transition process while maintaining operational continuity.  With Red Hat OpenShift, businesses can run both VMs and containers side by side, all while benefiting from a consistent management experience across cloud, on-premise, and edge environments with best in class and proven technology like Kubernetes, Kubevirt and KVM.

Many are turning to open source as a strategic solution for its modular nature and the openness and community innovation it offers. Enterprise open source gives organisations the ability to tap into an entire ecosystem of certified technology backed by the support and lifecycle management of a trusted vendor, unlocking the flexibility and, most importantly, control that many IT leaders are looking for.

The path forward

As businesses need to confront immediate challenges, they can lay the groundwork for future migrations. In considering a path forward, pushing net-new workloads to a new platform like Red Hat OpenShift can prevent further dependence on a single vendor. By taking the supported open source route, organisations can hit the ground running quickly, setting themselves up for success without compromising their current output and performance.
