Earlier this year, we announced the tech previews of Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform on IBM Power and IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE. Today, we are pleased to announce that Ansible Automation Platform is generally available on IBM Power, and IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE. Ansible Automation Platform gives the ability to utilize one platform to manage workloads across hybrid cloud environments. While customers were able to manage and execute Ansible on IBM Power and Z, they now gain the full Ansible Automation Platform functionality, including automation controller.  What does this mean for your organization? Read on for more information on how to utilize both.

IBM Power

Back in 2020, IBM released a set of Red Hat Ansible Certified Content for IBM Power, including collections for AIX, IBM i, Linux, VIOS and HMC. Since then, IBM and Red Hat have seen widespread adoption of Ansible Automation Platform as a vehicle for customers to optimize operations and refine new and existing use cases. This adoption has been largely due to the Ansible Automation Platform and IBM supported Power collections. Some of these use cases that the collections support include configuration management, software installation, compliance management and patching.

Starting now, customers will be able to run all Ansible Automation Platform components on IBM Power, as well as further extending support to IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE systems. Some highlights of the components of Ansible Automation Platform on IBM Power are:

  • Automation controller running on Linux on IBM Power and on Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Power.
  • Red Hat Ansible Certified Content is available on Ansible automation hub, which is only available with an Ansible Automation Platform subscription.
  • Custom-built automation execution environment containers for IBM Power are included.
  • Earlier this year, Red Hat released Event-Driven Ansible, which now runs on IBM Power.

IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE

Since announcing the IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE and Ansible Automation Platform partnership in 2019, customers have been leveraging supported collections and content with their Ansible Automation Platform subscriptions. This includes how to deploy Ansible Automation Platform on the mainframe.

Being able to consistently manage complexity and maintain consistency is key to Day 2 operations with resilience. For instance, customers have started with simple use-cases such as the orchestration of batch workloads and system status checks, and progressed to more complex scenarios like applying system maintenance, certificate renewal, and automating steps in CI/CD pipelines.

Some highlights of the components of Ansible Automation Platform on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE are:

  • Automation controller running on Linux on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE and on Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE.
  • Red Hat Ansible Certified Content is available on Ansible automation hub, which is only available with an Ansible Automation Platform subscription.
  • Automation execution environments on Linux on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE and on Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE.
  • Earlier this year, Red Hat released Event-Driven Ansible, which now runs on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE.
