In July, the OpenClaw Foundation was announced with Red Hat joining as a founding member to bring open, more secure infrastructure to autonomous AI agents. OpenClaw has quickly become a premier open source autonomous agent framework, and Red Hat’s involvement aims to bring the enterprise readiness, governance, and infrastructure needed to transition this technology from a powerful personal tool to a production-grade business asset.
The value of OpenClaw lies in its persistence. It automates tasks and workflows independently, using system integrations to act directly on a user’s behalf. As enterprise developers adopt autonomous agents from single laptops to distributed environments, they need to address enterprise IT infrastructure and security requirements. We are proud to have backed this community from day one and to provide the open source transparency and hybrid cloud flexibility these production deployments require.
We want developers to run their preferred agent runtimes securely on their choice of infrastructure across any hybrid cloud environment. This philosophy drives the core principle of our AgentOps strategy for Red Hat AI: bring your own agent (BYOA). Joining the OpenClaw Foundation makes this choice even more of a reality. Because persistent agents require deep access to internal systems, runtime security is non-negotiable for enterprise adoption. We are addressing this challenge directly by applying engineering resources to the OpenClaw and OpenShell projects. Through this upstream work, our dedicated upstream resources, led by core maintainer Sally O’Malley, will apply Red Hat’s deep engineering expertise in Linux, Kubernetes, vLLM, and core open source systems to help deliver operational reliability, community governance, and runtime risk mitigation.
Red Hat’s participation in the OpenClaw Foundation is two-fold. First, when a significant project like OpenClaw gains massive traction, there’s a lingering concern that a single corporate backer might suddenly change the license to a more restrictive one or shift previously community-forward features to be “paid version only.” By helping establish and anchor a neutral Foundation, Red Hat is working to keep OpenClaw publicly and fully accessible to the broader open source world under a permissive MIT license. With this approach, the community can keep building with confidence, knowing the rug won't be pulled out from under them.
Red Hat will also bring these upstream requirements directly into our broader Red Hat AI portfolio. We are building the enterprise AI platform layer so organizations can run their choice of agent runtimes, including OpenClaw, with control and confidence. Red Hat OpenShift AI delivers the model serving, identity-based tool filtering, and multi-tenant agent execution needed to run these OpenClaw workloads predictably across the hybrid cloud. By integrating OpenShell capabilities, we extend this posture-focused security layer from the developer’s desktop out to distributed Kubernetes environments. This architecture isolates runtime changes at the container level, keeping the underlying infrastructure predictable, controllable, and open as agent capabilities evolve and scale.
