Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization is included with Red Hat OpenShift and with it, you can migrate your traditional virtual machines (VMs) onto a consistent,  comprehensive, modern hybrid cloud application platform. It's based on KubeVirt, an upstream open source project that delivers container-native virtualization by using a kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) within a Kubernetes container.

Get started with OpenShift Virtualization

OpenShift Virtualization is an essential part of transforming and consolidating your platforms into a modern and unified tech stack that helps match your organization's skills and applications to its larger goals.

Want to know more? You're in the right place. Here are 7 learning resources that will help you and your team get started.

1. Introduction to Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization

Get an introduction to Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, and learn everything you need to get started, with this webinar (available until October 2024):

  • An overview of OpenShift Virtualization
  • Creating and deploying a VM
  • Connecting to a virtual machine
  • OpenShift Virtualization operator
  • Virtualization catalog
  • Examining Red Hat OpenShift pods for virtual machines
  • Managing images and templates

2. Getting started with Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization

The freedom to run a VM within a container, and on a single platform,  simplifies VM management and reduces time to production. Using OpenShift Virtualization enables you and your admins to incorporate VMs into your containerized workflow without having to drastically alter existing infrastructure.

This learning path provides the steps you need to configure Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, deploy new virtual machines, and import existing ones to a new environment. It includes resources that cover:

  • Installing the OpenShift Virtualization operator
  • Creating and deploying VM workloads
  • Migrating virtual machines

The learning path is designed for the operations teams and system administrators.

3. Manage virtual machines using Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization on Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS

When upgrading or migrating virtual machines, you want to minimize the impact on your users, but it can be difficult to keep your original infrastructure running seamlessly. This learning path demonstrates how to configure OpenShift Virtualization in Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA), deploy new virtual machines, and import existing ones to a new environment.

When you're done, you'll have:

  • A configured environment ready to run and manage virtual machines
  • A virtual machine created within ROSA
  • A virtual machine imported to a ROSA environment

This learning path is for operations teams or system administrators.

4. Manage Virtual Machines with Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization

Offered through Red Hat Training and Certification, this course puts you on the path to official certification. It gives you the essential skills you need to create and manage VM workloads using OpenShift Virtualization. No previous knowledge of containers and Kubernetes is required.

Managing Virtual Machines with Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization

In this course, you learn how to:

  • Create, access and manage VMs on OpenShift clusters
  • Control usage and access of CPU, memory, storage and networking resources from VMs using the same Kubernetes features that control usage and access to these resources for containers.
  • Create and manage High Availability (HA) VMs using standard Kubernetes features and OpenShift Virtualization extensions
  • Connect VMs on OpenShift to data center services outside of the OpenShift cluster, such as storage and databases

This course is also available as self-paced training: Managing Virtual Machines with Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization Self-paced Training (DO316SP).

When you're finished, get certified by completing the Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Virtualization Exam (EX316K).

5. Migration Toolkit for Virtualization

The Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV) helps you migrate your virtual machines at scale. This gives you the ability to access workloads running on a VM while developing new cloud-native applications. Migrations are performed in a few simple steps. First you provide source and destination credentials, then map the source and destination infrastructure, create a choreographed plan, and then finish by executing your migration plan.

In this video, Alan Cowles, Red Hat Principal Technical Product Manager, provides an overview of importing existing VMs with MTV version 2.6.

6. Ask an OpenShift Admin: Dive into OpenShift Virtualization

In this episode of Ask an OpenShift Admin, Ian Pilcher demonstrates some capabilities of OpenShift Virtualization and how it can fit into your application modernization strategy.

7. Ask an OpenShift Admin: VMs in Kubernetes?

Can you use VMs in Kubernetes? Of course you can! In this episode of Ask an OpenShift Admin, guest Peter Lauterbach, Product Manager for OpenShift Virtualization, discusses some of the architectural considerations to keep in mind when you want to bring your virtualized applications directly into your OpenShift cluster.

Bring your virtual machines to OpenShift Virtualization

There are lots of great reasons to migrate your virtual machines to OpenShift Virtualization. With the right training and the right plan, the process is easy, and it pays dividends in the end.
