What is Red Hat Hackfest?

Red Hat Hackfest, sponsored by IBM and Intel, is an initiative where teams of three to five members collaborate to create end-to-end solutions that address real-world challenges. During the three week Hackfest, participants will receive guidance and help to build skills and co-develop solutions to cover use cases requested by the market.

How it works

It is open to selected Red Hat EMEA partner technical and delivery experts who have the skills necessary to take part.

It is comprised of the following phases:

Enablement week

All team members are invited to attend the series of two-hour long enablement live virtual sessions that start at 15:00 CEST each day. The sessions are not mandatory but you will get all the latest information to give your team an edge during the Hackfest!

  • Monday October 25, 2021 - Red Hat Edge Computing Strategy & Intel vision
  • Tuesday October 26 2021 - Red Hat technology for manufacturing use-cases
  • Wednesday October 27, 2021 - Openshift as a central platform for innovation
  • Thursday October 28,2021 - The role of Integration by Red Hat in the distributed world
  • Friday October 29, 2021 - Quarkus deep dive and security

Development weeks

Participants use their existing and new knowledge to create an innovative and measurable Edge Computing solution to a real-world problem, based on cloud-native technologies. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Edge technologies: RHEL for Edge, Podman, The Red Hat Build of Quarkus
  • Edge server technologies: Single Node Openshift, Red Hat Integration, distributed security
  • Data center technologies: Red Hat OpenShift, Red Hat
  • Integration, Red Hat Runtimes, distributes security.
  • Additional technologies: Cert-manager, InfluxDB,
  • Cert-manager, PostgreSQL, InfluxDB, Grafana, Tekton pipelines, and Helm Charts.

Red Hat experts in IoT and cloud-native development will run weekly drop-in clinics to support the teams.

Presentation week

Red Hat subject matter experts will run weekly drop-in clinics, from 15:00 to 17:00 CET every Thursday from November 4 to 25, 2021, to support the teams.

Challenge

Simulate a production plant producing T-shirts from a production model distributed to facilities and, in turn, to machineries from a central datacenter.

Event handling, security and workload are distributed over geo-localized facilities and networks.

WIN PRIZES

While all participants will benefit from developing their skills, there is of course a competitive element to the initiative.

At the end of Red Hat Hackfest, teams will present their solutions to a panel of Red Hat, Quarkus and IoT expert for evaluation around the following criteria:

  • Radical innovation.
  • Level of Quarkification.
  • Edge device management. 
  • Container technology.
  • Red Hat integration.

The panel will select three winning teams, who will win one of the following prizes, and benefit from Red Hat publicity regarding their solutions.

1ST PLACE - SAMSONITE BACKPACK.
2ND PLACE - JBL HEADPHONES.
3RD PLACE - WATER BOTTLE.

Our champions

The Red Hat Hackfest team is proud to announce the winners of the 3nd Red Hat Hackfest for EMEA on Edge Manufacturing:

  1. LDS Open
    For demonstrating a broad skill set across the whole technology stack adopted by the hackfest technical team. The LSD has improved the content shared during the event, adding value and functionalities to the existing PoC.
  2. Piros
    For demonstrating a broad OPS skill set, as well as the ability to improve the content provided by the hackfest tech team during the Red Hat Hackfest event.
  3. Viada
    For the ability to understand and execute the whole Proof of Concept, demonstrating the ability to roll out and manage a complex use-case scenario.
