For many developers, desktop tools are where they spend most of their time and feel most comfortable. We also recognize that developers are looking for new ways to build applications and new tools that are designed for these technologies. Developers are now using the cloud to host and manage their developer environment and we see the tools that developers use moving to the cloud as well.

In the past year, we have taken steps to broaden our portfolio of developer tools. We acquired Codenvy to provide unique container-native offerings for our users, and we have been building OpenShift.io, our SaaS offering for cloud-native development.

Today, we are announcing two more leaps toward a container- and cloud-native future:

  1. OpenShift.io is now open access
  2. We plan to make Eclipse Che a supported offering of Red Hat in 2018.

OpenShift.io: A cloud-native development toolchain
OpenShift.io is a SaaS service that offers a pre-configured development toolchain. Teams can now build containerized applications immediately without having to install and configure any software. Developed software and issued pull requests are now live in minutes without custom infrastructure.

We believe OpenShift.io is the easiest way to create scalable and more secure applications deployed on OpenShift. Today, OpenShift.io is optimized for use with Java projects hosted on GitHub—enterprise support is planned for later in 2018.

Our goal with OpenShift.io is to offer a comprehensive enterprise development tool that scales from planning to full deployment—a scalable, reliable, and more secure foundation for next-generation development. In the spirit of open source, we will continue to share our work, and we’ll rely on our community to help identify issues and contribute to the journey ahead.

Eclipse Che: A container-native IDE
We are excited to offer a Red Hat-branded and supported product based on Eclipse Che. Che was the market’s first integrated development environment (IDE) built for container-native development and is a next-generation technology that is poised to move our industry forward.

Eclipse Che takes production container recipes and injects the tools developers need like language servers and debuggers so coding happens in production replica environments. It then makes them shareable within the team and automates their creation in response to external triggers. Our plan for the new Eclipse Che offering is for it to be tightly integrated with Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform.

In the meantime, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform customers are already able to use community Che with OpenShift to:

  • Accelerate the onboarding of developers and projects
  • Remove inconsistencies and “but it works on my machine…” moments
  • Increase protection for their source code by removing it from hard-to-secure laptops

We are planning to release details on the new Red Hat product, its support policy and pricing in the coming weeks.

Continuing to support existing workflows
Finally, to organizations and developers that develop on the desktop, Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio and Application Migration Toolkit are well-suited for making quick updates and modernizing existing apps. Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio, which was previously Java-focused, has been expanded to include support for additional runtimes like Node.js, Eclipse Vert.x, Spring Boot and WildFly Swarm.

Red Hat is proud to continue our commitment to supporting developers in a hybrid world, working across localhost and cloud-based software development workflows. Experience the breadth of our tools yourself by trying Openshift.io, Eclipse Che, or Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio.
