Digital Transformation has been well underway for many organizations looking for ways to effectively modernize, drive operational efficiencies and improve production in the industrial sector. Organizations in the manufacturing industries in particular, have relied on proprietary solutions and vertically-integrated vendors to address their immediate computing needs, but that seems to be changing as leaders are leaning toward capabilities that help grow and respond to changing circumstances in a more agile way.

Manufacturers need to reduce plant emissions and support resilient supply chains, as well as minimize downtime and detect problems before they impact production. As the shift to merging information technology (IT) with operational technology (OT) continues, for better transparency and more timely data analysis, manufacturers need an infrastructure that allows them to plan, adopt, and implement the technology components for successful transformation from a host of different sources, and run them at the edge or deploy on an open hybrid cloud.

Red Hat OpenShift, the industry’s leading enterprise Kubernetes platform, provides the flexibility and responsiveness to develop and maintain innovative applications, with the robust security and expert support enterprises need to rely on. Having a platform that can scale and expand without proprietary limitations or delays enhances implementation to be at the speed the business needs, and allows for seamless expansion, smooth growth and unfettered innovation.

Leading organizations in the manufacturing industry are collaborating with Red Hat to extend deployment capabilities and provide greater agility for their customers, including:

  • Critical Manufacturing, a pioneer in future-ready, multi-site manufacturing execution systems (MES), has a strategic collaboration with Red Hat to pave the way for greater innovation within the industrial sector and deliver solutions to support the deployment of MES based on open-source technology. Critical Manufacturing’s MES is certified to run on Red Hat Openshift and they plan to collaborate with Red Hat to deliver a combined offering for customers to run MES in Kubernetes, providing a consistent experience regardless where it is deployed –  on-premises or in the cloud.
  • Upstream built a cloud-based, cloud-agnostic automotive cybersecurity and data management solution for connected vehicles. But utilizing cloud services from multiple managed cloud service providers was complex as their implementations differ. Red Hat helped standardize Upstream’s environment, creating a foundation that is common across operators and cloud environments, easing maintainability, reducing customer implementation time, and hardening security.

Red Hat OpenShift has also enabled many organizations to enhance their scalability and interoperability, improving business efficiency and customer experience, like:

  • Hisense leveraged Red Hat OpenShift, Red Hat Application Services portfolio and Red Hat Consulting to build a containers and Kubernetes-powered cloud platform that runs software components such as data ingestion and analytics tools, databases, and DevOps tools to speed up new service launches, support innovation, and enhance customer experience.
  • Tata Motors is a leading global manufacturer of cars, utility vehicles, pick-ups, trucks, and buses. Realizing its system of record (SOR) could not keep up with growing expectations of digital solutions, it turned to Red Hat OpenShift to lay a foundation for improved processes and agile delivery of new services. The automobile manufacturer is now able to provide APIs for its various digital applications, making integration easier. Red Hat’s hybrid architecture support also gives Tata the flexibility of moving into the cloud with public providers such as Microsoft or AWS. This helps provide the advanced telematics and connected-car solutions that their customers demand.
  • Tokyo Electron is Japan's global supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. To connect its core SAP S/4HANA environment with a variety of department-specific subsystems and data, TEL sought to transform the interfaces from this mix of legacy and modern tools into microservices. With a new foundation based on Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Integration, the manufacturer has improved developer productivity and achieved 100% system availability—with minimal additional system load. Now, its businesses around the world can operate and make business decisions more efficiently.
