Event details

What is Red Hat Hackfest?

The Red Hat Hackfest is an initiative where teams of three to five people compete to design and create an edge side of an IoT architecture using Cloud-Native Technologies.

It is open to a specially selected group of Red Hat App Dev partners in EMEA, who have the App-Dev, Infra, and/or IoT skills necessary to take part.

How it works

The Red Hat Hackfest is different from the more well known, sprint-based hackathons, as it takes place over three weeks. There are different stages for each week:

Enablement week

All participants invited to attend two-hour long enablement webinars with Red Hat subject matter experts at 10 a.m. CEST each day.

  • Monday April 12, 2021 - The Red Hat build of Quarkus

  • Tuesday April 13, 2021 - Red Hat Edge computing & IoT value proposition

  • Wednesday April 14, 2021 - OpenShift as a central platform for innovation

  • Thursday April 15,2021 - The role of Integration by Red Hat in the distributed world

  • Friday April 16, 2021 - Quarkus deep dive and security

Development weeks

Participants use their existing and new knowledge to create an innovative and measurable Edge Computing solution to a real-world problem, based on cloud-native technologies. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Play with Fedora IoT running on an ARM device.

  • Play with container technology and cloud-native frameworks.

  • Finalize an IoT/Edge Computing solution integrating the edge device with the Data Hub on a secured landscape.

  • Try cloud-native technologies on the data center side.

Red Hat experts in IoT and cloud-native development will run weekly drop-in clinics to support the teams.

Presentation week

Each and every team will present the outcome of their commitment to the Jury and will discuss the technical choices made during the implementation phase.

Challenge

Setup a European environmental sensor network with our App Dev Partners based on a secured technology stack Red Hat technology* to document the effects of COVID-19 on the air quality over time.

The Jury

Mark Little - Vice President, Software Engineering Global.

Nicolas Barcet - Senior Director, Product Management Global.

George Gastaldi - Principal Engineer - Red Hat Application Services.

Max Andresen - Distinguished Engineer - Red Hat Runtimes.

Markus Eisele - EMEA BDM - Developer Adoption.

Andrea Battaglia - EMEA Partner Development Manager Techical, Red Hat Hackfest Lead.

Mattia Mascia - Principal Consultant - Red Hat Alps.

WIN PRIZES

While all participants will benefit from developing their skills, there is of course a competitive element to the initiative.

At the end of Red Hat Hackfest, teams will present their solutions to a panel of Red Hat, Quarkus and IoT expert for evaluation around the following criteria:

  • Radical innovation.
  • Level of Quarkification.
  • Edge device management.
  • Container technology.
  • Red Hat integration.

The panel will select three winning teams, who will win one of the following prizes, and benefit from Red Hat publicity regarding their solutions.

1ST PLACE - SAMSONITE BACKPACK.
2ND PLACE - JBL HEADPHONES.
3RD PLACE - WATER BOTTLE.
