Back in May, OpenShift Commons welcomed VMware’s Robbie Jerrom on stage as VMware and Red Hat started work to help our mutual customers run Red Hat OpenShift Container platform on VMware’s Software-Defined Datacenter. Here is a guest post from Robbie previewing VMworld.

Red Hat and VMware have been technology partners for many years, helping companies from around the world to build more secure, software-defined infrastructure:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux has been certified on VMware vSphere for more than a decade.
  • Red Hat OpenShift has supported VMware NSX-T networking for about three years.
  • Red Hat OpenShift has supported VMware vSAN for about a year based on VMware’s Kubernetes contributions.

As Red Hat’s Ashesh Badani said in his blog post about the reference architecture for OpenShift on VMware's SDDC stack “... this is just the first step -- Red Hat OpenShift 4 brings optimized installation capabilities to a variety of infrastructures and for this, the companies are working towards a VMware Validated Design. We are excited that VMware is working closely with Red Hat to deliver a simplified experience there in the coming months.”

Things have progressed since then, and with more than 30,000 people expected at VMworld 2019 from across the US and EMEA, we wanted to give you all the details on where those of you attending VMworld can find out more about running Red Hat OpenShift on the VMware SDDC. Our picks of the sessions for the Red Hat OpenShift customer running on VMware are:

Headline Session – Deploying and Running Red Hat OpenShift on VMware – #HBI2376 – Wednesday August 28, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. PT

Headlining we have Davis Phillips, one of Red Hat’s principal software Engineers, presenting alongside VMware’s Robbie Jerrom in session HBI2376BU – “Deploying and Running Red Hat OpenShift on VMware.” This session will provide a broad overview of the work we have done together for both customers running OpenShift 3.11 and what is planned for customers running 4.x. It will include a perspective on integrations into Wavefront, Cloud Automation Services, Log Intelligence, vRealize Codestream and NSX-T just as a sample as well as further news on the direction of these integrations.

Customer Story – Lessons Learned Deploying OpenShift with VMware SDDC – #CNET1444BU – Tuesday August 27, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. PT

For those who want to hear from a mutual Red Hat/VMware customer on their experience of running the OpenShift Container Platform on VMware. Vincent Han (VMware staff solution specialist) is joined by Wayne Cheng (senior DevOps engineer, Singapore Government - GovTech). If your organization uses OpenShift or any other Kubernetes platform today and would like to know how to streamline networking and improve security, this is the session for you. You will walk away with lessons learned from this experience, best practices, and tips and tricks to prepare for and implement a successful application platform with these solutions.

Deploying OpenShift Clusters with VMware Cloud Assembly – #CODE3455U/#CODE3456U Wednesday, August 28 3:30 – 4:00 p.m. and 4:00 – 4:30 p.m. PT

This session will show how to automate a production grade OpenShift cluster deployment using VMware Cloud Assembly. This also shows how to utilize VMware Cloud on AWS as a resource endpoint for the environment. The process is automated so that each time a cluster is deployed it could be repeated without any manual intervention.

Also make sure you stop by the Red Hat booth in the Solutions Expo at booth 227 where experts will be on hand to answer your questions.
