Red Hat, Inc. (NASDAQ:RHAT) the leader in developing, deploying and managing Open Source Internet infrastructure and Wincor Nixdorf today announced that they have developed a Linux-based, JavaPOS solution platform for retail point-of-sale (POS) systems. Designed for the Wincor Nixdorf BEETLE Family of POS systems, the platform is one of the first on the market to utilize the newly released JavaPOS 1.5 standard. This combination of Linux and JavaPOS on Wincor Nixdorf BEETLE POS systems provides retailers with one of the most highly scalable and flexible hardware/software platforms in the industry.
Wincor Nixdorf was an early adopter in the development of thin-client POS solutions based on the JavaPOS 1.5 standard, said Heinrich Endeward, head of Retail Services for Wincor Nixdorf. The JavaPOS 1.5 package weve developed enhances the already substantial advantages of Red Hat Linux as a platform for retail solutions.
An active member of the worldwide JavaPOS standardization committee, Wincor Nixdorf has developed a JavaPOS 1.5 package that allows retailers to build JavaPOS applications that connect many different kinds of retail peripherals. The result is a complete retail store solution based on established international standards.
Leading retailers such as The Home Depot (NYSE:HD) are firmly embracing Linux and JavaPOS as viable platforms for their store operations. "The Home Depot has been active in furthering the development of new retail standards in conjunction with manufacturers like Wincor Nixdorf, and has played a key role in creating the JavaPOS specifications," said Danny Branch, vice president of information systems for The Home Depot. "The JavaPOS platform provides us with significant flexibility in developing our store environment to meet our long-term functional requirements as well as reducing overall Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) as it relates to POS."
Retailers with full-fledged JavaPOS solutions will enjoy the advantage of its seamless integration into Internet-based technologies, which can speed the transition to multi-channel store solutions, Endeward continued. Another benefit of JavaPOS is the great efficiency of Java programming. This represents additional progress in rapid application development , which lowers the TCO significantly.
To help retailers realize the benefits of a Linux-based JavaPOS solution, Wincor Nixdorfs Retail Services Group works closely with them to provide support in introducing new Java-based applications or migrating existing applications into a Java environment. Red Hat also provides engineering services and support to Wincor Nixdorf and its customers. Additionally, work is underway on an infrastructure to deploy and manage Wincor Nixdorf´s POS solutions software platform remotely through Red Hat Network (RHN), resulting in even more TCO savings for customers.
