According to IDC, Linux operating system (OS) environments are expected to grow from 78% in 2021 to 82% in 2026 across physical, virtual, and cloud deployments. Fundamental to that growth is continued assurance that Linux OSs can provide organizations with more powerful and secure foundations upon which to build and run workloads in just about any environment.

For decades, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) has been the world’s leading enterprise Linux platform, partly because it delivers on those promises of power and a stronger security footprint. The latest version, RHEL 9.2, continues that tradition by allowing customers to include organizational-specific security policies in created images, security and compliance policy reinforcement through the RHEL web console, and more.

We are pleased to announce that the Defense Information Security Agency (DISA) has released a Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) for RHEL 9. It is available for download at the Department of Defense (DoD) Cyber Exchange. This builds on the recently released DISA STIG for Red Hat OpenShift, showing Red Hat’s continued drive to build a greater security posture for U.S. public sector IT across the hybrid cloud.

A continuous line of enhanced systems security

While RHEL 9 already features hardened code through Red Hat’s product build process, the STIG allows customers to purchase, deploy and configure the OS with the assurance that it is in compliance with STIG security guidelines. This will make it easier for customers in industries with stringent security requirements to attain “Authority to Operate” (ATO) for RHEL 9.

RHEL 9 is the latest Red Hat operating system to receive a STIG. The STIG for RHEL 8 was released in early 2021 and is currently available on the Cyber Exchange, while a DISA STIG for RHEL 7 is also available.  This further cements STIG availability across Red Hat’s hybrid cloud portfolio, which also include the recently released STIG for OpenShift 4 and the automation controller in Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform
