OpenShift Origin Community Day is coming to Mountain View, CA on July 27! Come join Red Hat engineers and OpenShift Origin community members for a OpenShift Origin Open Source PaaS Community Day taking place on July 27th.
Origin is the Community-Driven, Red Hat-Sponsored Open Source Next Generation of Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS).
Here's your chance to take a deep-dive into Red Hat's OpenStack and OpenShift engineering efforts including hands-on tutorials on how to deploy OpenShift to OpenStack plus building your own cartridges. Registration is free!
11:30 - 12:00 / Registration & Lunch
12:00 - 12:10 / Welcome to OpenShift Origin Community
Presenter: Diane Mueller
Diane Mueller (Cloud Ecosystem Evangelist) will set the stage for the day's event with a history of the OpenShift Origin Community efforts. She'll discuss the need for an Open Source Platform-as-a-Service, the contributions made to date, and how to contribute to OpenShift Origin.
12:10 - 12:30 / Introduction to OpenShift - Private, Public and Community
Presenter: Krishna Raman
Bill DeCoste (Principal Software Engineer for OpenShift) will introduce Red Hat's PaaS. He'll describe the several flavors of OpenShift ranging from the upstream community project Origin, the EC2-based online offering at http://openshift.redhat.com, to the corresponding commercial offering, OpenShift Enterprise. OpenShift Origin and Online will be demonstrated.
12:30 - 1:30 / OpenStack + OpenShift Integration, Demo and Roadmap
Presenter: TBD
Chris Wright (Lead Architect for Red Hat Cloud Engineering) will introduce Red Hat OpenStack (RHOS), and describe how Red Hat is playing a major role in the evolution of a truly open infrastructure as a service (IaaS) platform. He'll describe the upstream OpenStack project, the components, and what RedHat brings to the table in providing an enterprise OpenStack distribution. Chris and Krishna Raman (OpenShift Engineer and Community Lead) will then demonstrate running OpenShift on a RHOS installation and discuss the benefits of running OpenShift in this configuration as well as joint roadmap for future integration.
1:30 - 2:00 / DevOps @ OpenShift Online
Presenter: TBD
As the Release Engineer and a member of Operations team for OpenShift Online, a downstream consumer of OpenShift Origin and the largest Public implementation of OpenShift to date, Adam Miller will discuss what it's like behind the scenes at OpenShift.com and share lessons learned and bring his thoughts and feedback on the future direction of Origin.
2:00 - 2:15 / Break
2:15 - 3:00 / OpenShift Origin Internals
Presenters: Krishna Raman
In this talk. Bill and Krishna will dive deep into Origin's internals and architecture. Topics covered include a platform overview of the role Brokers and Cartridges play. An examination of system resources and application containers called "Gears" and "Nodes."
3:00 - 4:00 / Persistent Files & OpenShift
Presenters: David Strauss, CTO at Pantheon Systems; Linux Core OS maintainer & Krishna Raman
The file system of application containers are ephemeral. Any application data or files stored locally within these an OpenShift gear is lost when the instance is stopped or restarted. To solve this, the OpenShift community is working on designing a ‘filesystem’ service that can be shared between application instances, and even between applications deployed by the same user or group. In this panel session, David will be explaining Pantheon's approach to resolving this and we'll lead a discussoin about different approaches to delivering Persistence in OpenShift Origin.
4:00 - 5:00 / Extending OpenShift Origin: Build Your Own Cartridge
Presenters: TBD
Cartridges allow developers to provide services running on top of the Red Hat OpenShift Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). OpenShift already provides cartridges for numerous web application frameworks and databases. Writing your own cartridges allows you to customize or enhance an existing service, or provide new services. In this session, the presenter will discuss best practices for cartridge development and the latest changes in the OpenShift cartridge support.
Latest changes made in the platform to ease cartridge development
OpenShift Cartridges vs. plugins
Outline for development of a new cartridge
Customization of existing cartridges
Quickstarts: leveraging a cartridge or cartridges to provide a complete application
5:00 - 9:00 / Round Table & a Happy Hour Hack-a-thon
Here's your opportunity to give feedback, influence the roadmap, learn about Origin's governance policy and how to start contributing code to the project.
We'll supply the pizza & beer, and host a mini-Hack-a-thon so you can jump start your own Cartridges or learn the ropes of OpenShift Origin with other community members and the Red Hat engineers!
