New challenges present themselves every day. You need to achieve more in less time, meet current and future demands of customers, and spend time and cycles on innovative solutions to complex problems. This includes building and modernizing applications across multi-cloud and hybrid environments, and driving efficiency and productivity for developers and IT operations.
To optimize productivity, leading organizations are realizing they need more than just containers and Kubernetes. They need an application platform that helps them get started quickly and securely and efficiently build, deploy, manage and scale their applications. But what's included in an app platform? And what does it take to build one?
An application platform includes capabilities and components for coding, testing, deploying, and monitoring applications. With traditional Kubernetes services or do-it-yourself solutions, these additional components have to be procured and integrated on top of Kubernetes by the customer.
OpenShift is more than just Kubernetes
Red Hat OpenShift provides more than a Kubernetes engine or distribution. OpenShift delivers a comprehensive hybrid cloud application platform with pre-integrated and pre-validated tools and services designed to streamline and accelerate application development and deployment. Services and tools such as dev tools, CI/CD, monitoring, logging, service mesh, and more are already included, taking away the time and complexities of building an app platform. This allows developers and IT ops teams to get started quickly and achieve greater efficiency.
It's not just the initial setup and integration of the platform. Activities like cluster creation and management, monitoring and logging, updates, patches, and so on, are all the responsibility of the customer. Some organizations may not have the time, budget, and resources to manage this on their own.
OpenShift is a turnkey solution
To provide a turnkey solution, Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA) provides a fully-managed comprehensive application platform. ROSA offers a trusted, comprehensive and more consistent application platform out of the box, with the additional benefit that it is fully-managed 24x7 by our expert site reliability engineering (SRE) team. This allows customers to focus on building and deploying applications, not building, managing or maintaining the platform. SREs handle proactive monitoring and maintenance, automated patching and zero downtime upgrades.
Because ROSA is a first party native AWS service, it can be accessed and purchased directly from the AWS console and integrates with other AWS services such as AWS CloudWatch or Amazon RDS. So you can use the tools that are part of ROSA, or you can swap out the individual components for other AWS native tools and services. This is what we mean by “batteries included, but swappable” giving customers the flexibility to integrate with cloud native tools when needed. Customers also just receive a single bill for ROSA and AWS expenses and can take advantage of using AWS committed cloud agreements to use budget more efficiently.
Red Hat and AWS jointly operate and support ROSA with an integrated support experience and 99.95% uptime service-level agreement (SLA).
ROSA delivers the production-ready app platform that many enterprises already use on-premises today with a more consistent experience across the hybrid cloud so you can easily shift workloads to AWS according to business needs or demand. This gives customers increased flexibility and portability to run their applications where it makes the most sense for their business without having to learn or adapt to new tools and processes.
