(Korean Army chose Linux as its Wargame OS )

-

Korean Army chose Linux as its Wargame OS

Korean Army’s Wargame Model ‘Changjo 21’, which is for the use of Battle Command Training Program (BCTP), will make use of Linux as the OS.

This is the very first time to apply large scale of Linux in military. This will trigger the expansion of Linux use in military.

According to Battle Command Training Center of Headquarter, Army Education, OS for 44 current working servers used for ‘Changjo21’, in which 1.6Billion Won was invested, will be converted from Unix to Linux, and it has began working on the conversion. Army recently chose Red Hat’s ‘Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.3 AS’ as the new Linux OS.

In order to service ‘Changjo21’, Korean Army deployed 8 Unix servers in Year 2003, and 18 additional servers in Year 2004. As Korean Army deploys 18 additional Linux servers, it decided to integrate the OS of its previous 26 servers into Linux as well. Although OS of the servers will be changed into Linux, the OS of the client PCs will still be previously used ‘Window 2000’.

Major Pyo Chang Gyoon of Battle Command Training Center said “We concluded that the platform is cost saving and has both Unix and Window’s features.” He added that “It is also relatively advantageous in maintenance through open source software. Wargame development department will also work on deploying Linux.”

Korea Army will begin testing for the tools, finish deploying by the end of the year, and will begin full service next year.

Red Hat Korea which is supplying the products said that “The advanced technology of Linux has been proven by Korean Army, which considers scalability and compatibility for expansion of system in the future as the priority, as it chose Linux as the OS for its wargame.”
