Success story

BCA improves agility, scalability with container-based API platform

Overview

As Indonesia’s largest private bank, PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) provides financial services at more than 1,000 branches across the country. To better compete in a fast-changing financial services market, it needed to improve its agility and innovation. BCA used Red Hat container and platform technologies to build a cloud-native, scalable, microservices-based application programming interface (API) environment that lets its business units design, develop, and deploy applications more efficiently—and more in line with financial security policies.

Challenge

Improve the digital banking experience for customers

Facing increasing competition from financial technology startups that could more quickly integrate business partners to provide higher-value services to customers, BCA knew it needed to accelerate development and improve its own API access and management to meet expectations. It also needed an open banking approach to better communicate between its 500 internal applications and its 1,000+ physical branches, as well as a more modern platform to allow for scalability and innovation.

Solution

Use a container-based API platform to speed up and scale

Using Red Hat integration and platform technologies, BCA created a cloud-native, microservices-based API environment that automatically scales to meet unpredictable demand. Red Hat 3scale API Management provides the infrastructure to manage, share, and control the financial services provider’s APIs for performance and growth, while integration with Red Hat OpenShift lets it build and run applications in a contained, automated way. With help from Red Hat Consulting, BCA implemented the new architecture in less than 4 months.

Business outcome

Faster time to market with cloud-native integration

With this microservices-based approach—supported by DevSecOps and a continuous innovation and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipeline—BCA has reduced its time to market from 3 months to 1 month. With Red Hat OpenShift’s autoscale capabilities, it can better protect current and future workloads. With separate gateways to support internal and external API transactions, it can minimize outage and error impact. And with stronger production environment monitoring, it has achieved 100% availability for customer-facing services.
